Alfa and TRIBEKA join the Global Alzheimer’s Association Interactive Network

Data generated within the Alfa Study at Barcelonaβeta Brain Research Institute (BBRC) and the TRIBEKA neuroimaging platform is now available, upon request, on the Global Alzheimer’s Association Interactive Network (GAAIN) web page.

GAAIN enable researchers to explore large cohorts of Alzheimer’s subjects and/or cognitively healthy people who may be at risk of developing the disease, such as the Alfa parent cohort. “As data sharing is crucial to promote collaborative research aimed to prevent Alzheimer’s disease, the GAAIN platform is a very useful tool to explore big data”, says José Luis Molinuevo, Scientific Director of the Alzheimer’s Prevention Program at BBRC.

The Alfa Study is a research platform to identify early pathophysiological features of Alzheimer's disease, its early detection, and to be able to develop prevention strategies for people at risk. The study was launched in 2013, thanks to the Pasqual Maragall Foundation and the funding from 'la Caixa', and is one of the most complex initiatives and with the largest number of research participants in the world, with 2,743 cognitive-healthy participants.

Part of the neuroimaging data from the Alfa Study are also being included in TRIBEKA, which is an open access neuroimaging platform designed to deliver the largest and best characterised data for understanding neurodegenerative disease and related clinical models in mid-life. The project, which is funded by the Alzheimer’s Association, will include a total sample size of more than 1,000 subjects from the Alfa Study of BBRC and the Prevent Study of the Centre for Dementia Prevention of the University of Edinburgh.
