Dr. Marc Suárez-Calvet receives the "2021 Alzheimer Award" from the SEN

The head of the Fluid Biomarkers and Translational Neurology Group at the Barcelonaβeta Brain Research Center (BBRC), Dr. Marc Suárez-Calvet, has been awarded the 2021 Alzheimer Award by the Spanish Society of Neurology (SEN). The SEN recognizes the work in favor of neurology, in the scientific and social fields, of people, entities or institutions. In the case of Dr. Suárez-Calvet, his leadership, work and key contributions in the field of biochemical biomarkers, both in plasma and in cerebrospinal fluid, in the field of neurodegenerative diseases have been highlighted.

The research carried out by Dr. Suárez-Calvet focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration, as well as the development of fluid biomarkers (CSF and blood) for neurodegenerative diseases. In addition to his work at the BBRC since he joined in 2018, he is a clinical neurologist at Hospital del Mar (Barcelona). Dr. Suárez-Calvet has a degree in Medicine (UAB) and Biochemistry (UB) and Doctor cum laude (UAB). Throughout his career he has combined clinical experience with intense work as a researcher. The research group that he currently leads at the BBRC carries out translational research to develop biomarkers, discover new therapeutic targets and provide a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms of Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases.

The awarding of the "Alzheimer Prize 2021" took place in the modernist area of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau in Barcelona, as part of the institutional act of the SEN, which wanted to recognize the enormous task carried out by people and institutions of the social and scientific spheres in the field of neurology.
