The second call for Pasqual Maragall Researchers Program grants receives 40 applications, more than 40% for projects led by women

Following the success of the first edition of the program, the Pasqual Maragall Foundation presented in October the second call for Pasqual Maragall Researchers Program (PMRP) research grants, with the aim of promoting clinical or translational research projects focused on Alzheimer's or other age-related neurodegenerative diseases.

This new call, which closed on November 21, has received a total of 40 applications, known as Letter Of Intent (LOI), of which 22 are for collaborative projects and 18 for to individual projects. In addition, more than 40% of requests (17 out of 40) are for projects led by women

The PMRP 2023 has an endowment of 1.6 million euros and is aimed at individual projects led by a principal investigator, or collaborative projects (of a maximum of three groups) led by a consortium coordinator who has its research activity to public or non-profit research organizations in Spain. Each winning application may receive up to 800,000 euros, which will finance the research project for a maximum of five years.

This new call for scholarships has gathered mostly applications from Catalonia (19) and the Community of Madrid (9). In addition, other research centers in Andalusia, Asturias, the Canary Islands, the Valencian Community, Navarre, La Rioja and the Basque Country have sent a proposal to be able to obtain one of the grants that the Pasqual Maragall Foundation will award for the research of neurodegenerative diseases related to age.

Among the requests there are also 11 collaborations with research staff from international centers in Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States and France, among others.

An external evaluation committee made up of experts is studying and analyzing each of the requests. The resolution of the grants is scheduled for July 2024 and the start of the winning projects will be from October.

The 2022 PMRP call supports three excellence research projects in age-related neurodegenerative diseases led by Pablo Martínez-Lage (Fundación CITA-Alzhéimer Fundazioa); Hugo Peluffo (University of Barcelona) and José Vicente Sánchez Mut (Institute of Neurosciences of Alicante-CSIC).
