Every year, 900,000 people in Spain lose their identity due to Alzheimer's and other dementias, a figure that could double in the next two decades if effective solutions are not found to slow its progress. According to the WHO, Alzheimer's is one of the main causes of mortality and disability and affects 1 in 10 people over 65 years of age and a third of those over 85 years of age.
In Spain, almost a million families affected by this pathology assume 87% of its cost, which amounts to about €35,000 per patient, and they dedicate an average of 70 hours a week to caring for people with Alzheimer’s.
World Alzheimer's Day calls for the urgency of placing this disease among the strategic political priorities and providing resources for its approach, both in research and in supporting affected families. We are facing a structural and silent pandemic. Longevity is increasing and we do not have treatments that stop the progression of the disease. In the short and medium term, if we do not manage to change the current situation, it will be difficult to bear for those affected and their families, as well as for public health and social protection services.
La investigación en Alzheimer tiene nombre y apellido
We are convinced that only through science will we achieve a future without Alzheimer's in which no one loses their identity. This September 21st, with the initiative "Alzheimer's research has a name and surname", we highlight those people who work daily to bring us closer to our goal of a world without Alzheimer's: our research team.
At the Barcelonaβeta Brain Research Center, the research center of the Pasqual Maragall Foundation, nearly 100 professionals focus their efforts on the early detection of Alzheimer's, its prevention and the study of the cognitive functions affected in healthy and pathological aging, to provide new scientific solutions that contribute to ending this disease.
Today, your name and surname also count. Sign here and help us ensure that no one else loses their identity in the future.
