Dr. Gemma Salvadó, new Group Leader of the Neuroimaging Research Group at BBRC

Dr. Gemma Salvadó has been appointed as the new Group Leader of the Neuroimaging Research Group at the Barcelonaβeta Brain Research Center (BBRC). Salvadó holds a PhD in Biomedicine from the University of Barcelona and a Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. She has a solid background in the field of neuroimaging, since she joined the BBRC Neuroimaging group as a predoctoral researcher in 2017, where she collaborated until 2021. During this stage, she carried out her PhD thesis “Detection of early cerebral amyloid-ß deposition by PET imaging and its downstream effects”, focused on understanding the preclinical stages of Alzheimer's disease using neuroimaging and fluid biomarkers. Her work was awarded in the II Edition of the National Award for the best doctoral thesis in Diagnosis based on Imaging and Genomics by the QUAES Foundation.

Dr. Salvadó has continued her research at Lund University (Sweden) as associate researcher, where she will continue to collaborate to enrich her current work and where she has studied plasma and cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers to better understand disease progression.

The BBRC Neuroimaging Research Group consists of a multidisciplinary team of experts in acquisition, processing and analysis of complex neuroimaging data. Its research is mainly focused on the study of brain images obtained with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET), techniques that allow the identification of pathophysiological changes associated with Alzheimer's disease and healthy aging, providing valuable information for the development of prevention strategies.

Dr. Salvadó will be fully incorporated into her new responsibility next January, but since November of this year she has already started a progressive integration in the BBRC to facilitate a smooth transition.
